Ré-imaginer le passé is more than just two exhibitions in Dakar and Berlin—it is a long-term research journey, spanning several months. Departing from a participatory approach, a team of German and Senegalese curators brings together a group of curious minds and visionary artists to explore our past and future. The project addresses the question of whether a reinterpretation of the past can produce other narratives for the future and thus a new ethic in the relations between the global South and the global North.
The concept of the imaginary serves here as a starting point from which to rethink current realities and thereby contribute to their change. By focusing on the coloniality of our times, the project proposes to revisit the past and imagine a future from a decolonial perspective, hereby creating space for other narratives, knowledges and new ways of thinking.
These thoughts were the starting point for a workshop series held in May 2023 in Dakar —called LABoratoires—in which the participating artists together with thinkers Nikita Dhawan and Maria do Mar Castro Varelas shared their approaches and practices. The artworks shown in the exhibition emerged out of this dialogic process and most of them were commissioned specifically for this context. The artists revisit objects, rethink history and rediscover knowledge, thereby bridging across space and time.
Ré-imaginer le passé is part of the series of events, artist residencies and exhibitions of the TALKING OBJECTS LAB – Decolonizing Knowledge, which has since 2020 been organized in Germany, Senegal and Kenya. www.talkingobjectslab.org

Ré-imaginer le passé ne se limite pas simplement à deux expositions à Dakar et Berlin, il s'agit d'un voyage de recherche à long terme, s'étendant sur plusieurs mois. Guidée par une approche participative, une équipe de conservateurs allemands et sénégalais réunit des esprits curieux et des artistes visionnaires pour explorer notre passé et notre avenir. Le projet aborde la question de savoir si une réinterprétation du passé peut produire d’autres récits pour l'avenir et donc une nouvelle éthique dans les relations entre le Sud global et le Nord globale.
Nous nous référons au concept de l'imaginaire comme point de départ pour repenser les réalités et de contribuer ainsi à leur changement. En se focalisant sur la colonialité de notre époque, le projet propose de revisiter le passé et d'imaginer un avenir à partir d'une perspective décoloniale, afin d'ouvrir la possibilité de nouveaux modes de pensée, d'autres savoirs et d'autres récits.
Ces réflexions émanent d'une série d'ateliers - appelés LABoratoires et organisés en mai 2023 à Dakar - au cours desquels les artistes participants et les penseurs Nikita Dhawan et Maria do Mar Castro Varelas ont partagé leurs approches et leurs pratiques. C'est dans ce processus dialogique qu'ont évolué les œuvres d'art présentées dans l'exposition, dont la plupart ont été commandées spécifiquement pour ce contexte. Les artistes revisitent les objets, repensent l'histoire, redécouvrent la connaissance et jettent un pont entre l'espace et le temps.
Ré-imaginer le passé fait partie de la série d’évenements, résidences d`artistes et d’expositions TALKING OBJECTS LAB - Decolonizing Knowledge, qui se déroule depuis 2020 en Allemagne, au Sénégal et au Kenya. www.talkingobjectslab.org
